Vegetables vs fruits
My perspective is that a plant without its fruits may live to make more fruits; whereas a plant without its leaves will likely die. Most fruits are sweet and starchy to entice animals to eat the pulp and help spread seeds; it would seem to me that the plants are designed to keep the vital nutrition in its leaves. For most of our ancestors, fruits were a seasonal treat and not available year round.
